Description
Josephine and husband M. Toscan Bennett lived on Forest St., near Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stow. She was a member of history organizations DAR and NSCDA, active in and officer of the National Woman's Party, founder of the Hartford Equal Franchise League. A prominent advocate for women's rights, she fought to ban child labor, fought for equality of women in the workplace, pensions for mothers, educational reform. With her husband she donated land in Katonah, NY, to create Brookwood Labor College, the country's first residential workers' school.
