Biographical Text
I teach the history of Italy, early modern Europe, and the Mediterranean. I have written on humanism and seventeenth-century science, on volcanoes and volcanology, on natural history, disasters, and urban history. My first book, Watching Vesuvius (University of Chicago), was published in 2012. My current research and writing in the history of early modern science explores the relationship between darkness and scientific observation; I will present research in Italy in September (2015). I am also writing on the life of a boy in sixteenth-century Italy. This spring I joined the editorial board of an Italian press, ViVa Liber. More
